utopia cloak arrives on film with six track ep, marina gardens. utilising both electronic & acoustic components, the british producer crafts hazy, dynamic electronica with a decidedly emotive bent. the music explores a curious production aesthetic - at once half sunk and at the same time gloriously crisp and direct. caustic drum machine hits underpin the majority of the work, compete with polyrhythmic rolls & glitches, while softly warping synth lines occupy the majority of the remaining sonic space. rather than working explicitly with nostalgia, utopia cloak makes more subtle references to the classic sounds of yore - riffing on downtempo & idm with gentle and considered nuance, eking out arcane hooks & rich melodies with a pleasing focus on compositional structure & songcraft. contrast is the key here, though - and utopia cloak works hard to find the balance between metallic per-cussion strikes and wide-angle instrumental elements, avoiding chaos in favour of a lush, rewarding lis-tening experience.

the utopia project, yet another one of many pseudonyms for legendary producer rheji burrell of burrell brothers fame. all 4 of the files contained within this ep bear the classic hallmarks and sounds of the burrell brothers signature style, taut drum programming, deep, melodic synth washes, bass-lines from the darkest recesses of nycs streets and dance-floors and an instantly recognizable atmosphere. like much of the brothers output these tracks are designed to be heard either very, very late at night or in the early hours of the morning and are some of the defining sounds of new yorks underground night-clubs in the formative parts of the 1990s. a true underground house record, over 20+ years old and still sounding as fresh and current as ever, file 1 is now available again for 2015, re-mastered and re-pressed with the permission of and in conjunction with the burrell brothers / nu-groove records, new york city.

mikals *spiritual* is inspired by the sounds of classic metalheadz. a relaxed atmosphere soon gives way to a thunderous kick drum and warped bass. it is easy to hear how this vinyl cut has been hammering clubs across the world.on the flip continues utopias desire to push for consistent quality. rido performs his remix duties of *the chant* most admirably. dream-inducing atmospherics introduce this one, lulling us as the break builds up from the back of the mix into a climatic drop of beat and bass weight combined with the most meaty bass stab for the turnaround soldiers. dj support from andy c, friction, goldie, break and many distinguished others.
